## How it works

Reddit is thousands of separate communities called subreddits. Each one has its own rules about self-promotion, set by its moderators. Always read the rules in the sidebar before you post.

r/SideProject is the friendliest place to start. Sharing your own project there is the whole point, as long as you explain what it is, who it is for and why you made it.

Bigger business subreddits like r/startups and r/SaaS are much stricter about promotion. Many only allow it in special weekly threads.

Reddit's long-standing rule of thumb is "90/10": most of what you do should be joining in (comments, help), and only a small part should be about your own product.

## Good fit if

- Early feedback from real users
- Products for a clear niche (there is a subreddit for almost everything)
- Makers happy to share the story, not just the link

## Skip it if

- You only want to drop a link and leave. Reddit removes that
- Your account is brand new with no history

## Prepare before you start

- [ ] A Reddit account with some history. Comment helpfully in your target subreddits for a few weeks first. Brand-new accounts often get filtered automatically
- [ ] A list of 3 to 5 subreddits where your users hang out, with their rules read
- [ ] A post written for Reddit: the story, what you built, what it costs to run, what's not working, and one specific question
- [ ] Screenshots or a short video (Reddit lets you post images and video)
- [ ] Time to reply to comments for the first few hours

## Step by step

1. **Find your subreddits.** Start with r/SideProject. Then search Reddit for the problem your product solves, and note which subreddits come up. Read each one's rules.
2. **Join in before you post.** Spend a few weeks answering questions and giving feedback on other people's projects. This builds karma and trust, and moderators notice.
3. **Write the post.** Lead with the problem and the story, not the link. Say what you built and with what. Be honest about what is rough. End with a specific question. Put the link in the post or the first comment, depending on the subreddit's rules.
4. **Post to one subreddit at a time.** Don't paste the same post into ten subreddits in one hour. Adjust each post to that community and spread them out.
5. **Reply to everyone.** Answer every comment. If someone points out a bug, thank them and fix it. That reply often gets more attention than the post.

## Rules (break these and your launch gets removed or ignored)

- Read each subreddit's rules first. Many ban self-promotion outside special threads
- No "check out my app [link]" posts with no context. They get removed
- Don't ask for upvotes
- Don't use several accounts to promote or upvote yourself. It can get every account banned
- Don't post the same thing everywhere at once

## Tips

- Titles that describe a result or a lesson do better than titles that announce a product
- "What I learned building X" posts often bring more users than "I launched X"
- Give feedback on other people's posts in r/SideProject. People return the favour
